What are the potential results for genetic risk testing?

Possible results

Positive: A positive test result generally means your genetics give you a higher-than-average risk of developing a specific condition. It also means you can work with your doctor to proactively address the condition or set up a monitoring plan to help detect it early, when it could be most treatable.

Negative: A negative result generally means we did not identify any changes in your genes that, based on current knoweldge, could increase your risk of developing a certain disease or disorder. This means you should continue with your doctor’s recommendations, like eating right, getting exercise and going to all your appointments.

Carrier: A carrier result means that your test found a variant (or change) in one copy of a gene that is associated with a specific medical condition. Being a carrier typically does not affect your health. In fact, most of us are carriers of at least one genetic condition.1 While being a carrier of a genetic variant does not typically affect your health, it can have reproductive risks that you may wish to discuss in more detail with your healthcare provider and/or a genetic counselor.
