Provider FAQs: Billing
Invitae has joined the Labcorp team to further the future of genetics. During the transition, providers, patients and other customers may receive information from Invitae, Labcorp Genetics or both organizations.
Billing and payment
- Labcorp Genetics bills “per clinical area.” What does this mean?
Invitae’s test options are designed to support flexibility and the ability to customize orders while making bills manageable. Our panel tests are billed “per clinical area,” which means a clinician can select a pre-curated test, combine multiple tests, or customize their own test for each patient—including re-requisition.
Orders that include genes in two different clinical areas will require two sample tubes and result in two reports generated by two different teams of clinical experts.
Please view our online test catalog or our clinical areas flyer to learn more. Note that all genes included in each of our pre-curated panels—including their preliminary-evidence and add-on genes—fall within a single clinical area.
- What payment options are available?
As Labcorp is an in-network laboratory with all major health plans, we submit insurance claims for all insured patients (including Medicare/Medicaid patients) to the appropriate plan. We anticipate more insured patients’ testing will be covered based on Labcorp’s relationship with these plans, and there will be broader support for patients with Medicare and Medicaid.
For uninsured patients, we have a number of options available to support them based on financial need. Labcorp proactively contacts patients whose out-of-pocket cost exceeds $100 to provide options and address financial hardship as appropriate.
All patients whose out-of-pocket cost exceeds $100 will be contacted before receiving a bill to provide timely information about the program options available to each patient based on their personal financial situation.
Please view our dedicated billing webpage to learn more. You can also contact our billing team at LcGeneticsBilling@labcorp.com or 833-941-0828.
- What is the Labcorp Genetics patient assistance program?
With the Labcorp Genetics patient assistance program, our dedicated billing specialists work with each patient to get a comprehensive view of their individual situation and help identify cost-effective and affordable payment options.
Labcorp is committed to making genetic testing accessible and affordable. Labcorp is an in-network laboratory with all major health plans, so we expect that many more insured patients’ testing will be covered.
For insured and Medicare/Medicaid patients, all insured patient costs will be billed to their insurance provider at contracted rates.
For uninsured patients, we have a number of options available to support them. Patients whose out-of-pocket expense exceeds $100 will be contacted before receiving a bill.
Our Labcorp specialized genetic counselors provide personalized case reviews as needed to maximize insurance payments and help minimize patient responsibility.
When a patient’s bill is determined to be over $100, they receive an automated call advising them to contact our patient access team. Patients whose out-of-pocket responsibility is determined to be over $250 receive a live call from our billing support team to facilitate prior authorization, appeals and other options to support affordability.
Invitae's family variant testing policy, variants of uncertain significance (VUS) policy and re-requisition programs remain the same.
Labcorp’s financial assistance program criteria and a percent discount are based on patients' personal circumstances instead of a fixed cost outcome, which our billing team helps them navigate. Eligibility criteria factor in existing medical expenses.

This information can be entered during the online ordering process when third-party insurance billing is selected as payment.
